Frankly in Love by David Yoon is a story about the conflicting pull of being Korean and being American. Korean traditions are valued above all else. Korean-American youth try to navigate American culture while coping with traditional Korean pressures. There is a requirement for educational perfection and excellence and there is an expectation that they will only date and marry a person who is Korean. Frank and Joy are both Korean-American high-schoolers and they pretend to date one another in order to gain the freedom to date who they want without parental intervention. The first look touched every emotion; it was an engaging story of young adults struggling to find their place between two cultures.
