Good but Not Great

I am hovering between a 3 and 3.5 star rating. Do not get me wrong—FOUR DEAD QUEENS is a great debut. The last 1/4th especially had me turning the pages so fast. But I think I fell victim to the "hype" factor. After hearing this had been so highly sought after at book conventions and on Most Anticipated 2019 lists, I was convinced this would be at least a 4-star book for me. And again, it is not by any means bad—but it wasn't to the level I was expecting. And to be completely honest, I feel like I would've appreciated this a lot more if it hadn't been so talked to death.

I loved the idea of the four queens who rule in harmony over Quadara. Keralie was a great protagonist and I was rooting for her and Varin from the start. FOUR DEAD QUEENS wraps up nicely and I am truly interested to see what Scholte does next.
