Confusing at first blush

I am generally a fan of fantasy and sci-fi, especially anything with a new and exciting setting and plot. However, I was a bit disappointed by the "sneak peek" of Four Dead Queens. I found the writing style of the author to be simultaneously too simplistic and a bit confusing. At times I felt like there was too much information being presented all at once, and instead of an intriguing storyline that gradually revealed setting and character details, it felt more like a list that was being read off. It was hard to tell what the temporal setting was supposed to be; at times there were referenced to advanced scientific developments such as DNA technology, and at other times there were references which made it seem like a medieval setting. Additionally, I was just not captivated at all by the characters; they didn't seem relatable and I was not particularly interested in what happened to them.
