Wow...I can't wait to get my hands on this one! Only 60 pages in and it's already addicting.
First off, the world is very well laid out and easy to understand. This is a hard thing to do for many fantasy writers and the author did it well in a short amount of pages. I feel like I "get" the way this world works and I'm definitely intrigued enough to keep reading to find out more.
Secondly, the plot kicked off right away but hasn't felt rushed at all. I'm eager to learn more about how the first queen was murdered and who is behind it all. And I can already see how Mackiel may be involved, based on his growing cruelty and the memory Keralie experiences at the end of the excerpt.
Finally, the characters are pretty fleshed out with some interesting glimpses into their past that I can't wait to learn more about.
All in all, this is definitely my kind of fantasy story and I can't wait to buy this one when it comes out so I can finish it...most likely in one sitting :)
