In the example chapters provided, I felt like the author did a great job developing the characters right away. I immediately knew what kind of people they were and what they were doing. That makes it easier for me to get involved in a story. The excerpt sounds like a really interesting plot. I like the friends to enemies romance trope so being forced to work together to stay alive seems like an interesting way to get them involved.
The only problem I have with some fantasy books and this is a good example, are the names. There are numerous made up names for characters and people with no instruction for how to pronounce them. Maybe its my pet peeve but I like to feel comfortable with the words and names I am reading.
