Wasn't Impressed
Not going to lie, the beginning really hooked me. You're thrust right into the action with Elias and there's magic and monsters and action and adventure! Even the introduction of Ophelia wasn't too bad. She's a young woman you has the ability to read and absorb other people's emotions and I felt bad for how she let her mother walk all over her. I couldn't wait for the two of them to meet and when they did it was underwhelming.
Then enter a time jump and Lucas and I was still somewhat interested. But as the story kept going, Lucas and Ophelia just become annoying. Ophelia was understandable, she was suddenly thrust into this whole new world. But Lucas. Ohmygod. He knew from the beginning that Elias and Ophelia were soulmates and yet, he let himself fall in love with Ophelia and let Ophelia fall in love with him. It was incredibly selfish of him considering he already had his own soulmate (who unfortunately died) so he knew exactly what Elias and Ophelia would feel for each other. He just seemed like a big baby and not someone who's been alive for ages.
While Lucas was being annoying, Ophelia (along with us, the reader) is finding everything out about her new life and it's somewhat confusing and rushed. And Elias is keeping his distance and is full of secrets and it's all incredibly frustrating. There's so many cliffhangers and unanswered questions. Like, Elias and Lucas hate each other but it's never really explained. They (mostly Lucas) take it out on Ophelia. They fall a truce just for everything to fall apart causing the three of them, Elias, Lucas, and Ophelia to run fir their lives. Ending the book on another cliffhanger.
The main issues that drew me into the book in the first place take a backseat to the love triangle leaving everything else around it to feel flat and underdeveloped. And I just really didn't like Lucas.
