Immediately, I felt dystopian vibes but this seems to be a straight contemporary. This makes me think of Promise Boys by Nick Brooks since there is a dystopian-ness I believe to the way that a lot of systems work.
I think that the story benefits from showing the viewpoint of Violetta and Vince- with Vince you also get a bit of the parents point of view (they are not that bad), Violetta you are seeing how she feels but view of the juvenile justice system from inside. I feel like a lot of really good conversation can come from this story - juvenile justice system outside/inside, what the families deal with, correlation between dystopian & realistic contemporary stories, forgiveness & recovery, commentary on prison/jail/justice/punishment.
