Tonally weird

I read the summary and thought, "What?" Unless someone's on really bad terms with their family, I can't see a mother and father pressing charges against their own child, no matter what they did. The inclusion of something called the "Trials" makes it sound suddenly like a speculative novel. If it's going for satire it doesn't really hit the mark for me; it's just weird tonally. The writing is my biggest issue though; it's very meh.
