In this excerpt we meet Violetta, she is in a juvenile detention center awaiting sentencing for her crime. She caused her sister’s death. It was accidental but it was Violeta’s fault as far as we can tell. It’s not about whether she’s guilty, it’s about how to sentence her.
I was surprised how quickly I felt empathetic for Violetta. She’s heartbroken too. She feels awful about her sister. She’s upset about the mess her life was at the time of the accident. She desperately wants her family to forgive her. And she’s scared of her sentencing.

This book sets a very thought provoking idea for her sentencing: they leave it up to the victim’s family to decide. And of course the victim’s family is Violetta’s family too.

The family can decide to:
Forgive her and let her come home
Make her stay in juvenile detention
Make her participate in The Trials

Her family picks The Trials. They believe it’s a chance for her to be rehabilitated and to come home sooner than detention. But I’m picturing The Hunger Games and I am concerned for her.

Very intriguing.
