Realistic But With a Tinge of Hunger Games
Whew! This book manages to combine teenage angst over relationship breakups, family squabbles, and a horrific teen driving accident - all while pulling the blinders off the system known as the juvenile justice system. Young Violetta's driving has killed another member of her family. She is a juvenile, but is the justice system truly an arm of justice? That system in this compelling YA novel seems to have a touch of 'Hunger Games' punishment. Family members decide whether or not to forgive the offending member with a cold-hearted, remote light bulb where red means you are not forgiven. And then? Then you must face the Trials. That's right, Trials with a capital T. And yes, plural. The description of other teenagers returning from trials with wounds and cuts sounds terrifying! This is not an ordinary YA novel!
