Followers takes a no-holds barred look at the world of internet celebrity • Alternating between a present day timeline and a future timeline, this book is told from the perspective of two very different narrators • In each timeline we learn how the internet affects the lives of our main characters
In the present day, Orla is a wannabe author working as a blogger for a website • Orla is a regular person but her roommate Floss is craving a different type of lifestyle • The two band together and launch Floss to internet celebrity status through social media and Orla's blogging • Soon both their lives have changed dramatically but if it is for the better is up for questioning
The future storyline is a world after what is known as "The Spill" • The government has taken control of the internet • An entire city has been created where internet celebrities reside, broadcasting their lives (not exactly unscripted) to their millions of followers • Marlow has grown up in front of the world but is she content with the life she leads?
I highly enjoyed this book and how it made me think of our current social media and internet usage • The alternating storylines flowed well • I got a kick out of trying to piece together how they connected • Angelo does a great job of revealing small bits of info at a time to keep you guessing • The only downfall for me was that the ending seemed a bit rushed, resulting in problems resolving a little to quick to be believable • A more detailed ending or chapters from Floss' perspective would have been welcome
