YAs are hit or miss for me—mostly a miss. This one might have some potential but I'm not holding my breath. The cover is okay. It's nothing special. The thing that would make me pick it up is the title, not the cover design. The synopsis makes me want to read it. Magical realism and romance are always a good combo for me. Especially with diverse voices. But then I started the excerpt that that's where started to go down a bit. I liked the start, that the author gave fate a voice. But then I lost some confidence in the story. Ava is supposed to be interning at the LA Times, and her boss, the features editor, is only 25-ish? Um, no. Not believable at all. The current LA Times features editor is in her mid-thirties and worked as a reporter for 5 years before becoming an associate editor and then working her way up to features editor in 8 years. So, no, not buying that a guy 3-ish years out of college is already the features editor of one of the top newspapers in the U.S. From there, I thought the writing was okay. The story really didn't grab me as I had expected. I might pick this up but I won't go out of my way to get it.
