I was surprised to see that we are introduced to the characters of this book by watching them compete in the most important event of their lives to date. This is like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire starting with the Triwizard Cup. It's hard to imagine that the action could pick up beyond this point.
And yet that's what happens. We get to know our main characters, Lee and Annie, by seeing how they think about each other and their other "classmates" as they engage in competition for an important title. What a great way to pick up the action right off the bat.
