I like the bright red color of the cover, the rays add a nice touch, but the dragon and title text could use a little reworking. The dragon should, I think, have more detail (possibly with being made out of something like Celtic knots or Nordic runes, but this style would match what is canon in the Fireborne lore/universe). The title text is a little too bland and should match the style of a language of old in the Fireborne lore/universe (or at least something close to it). Other than those two things, the cover was alright.
Now, on to the snippet of Fireborne that was given.
It was absolutely fantastic! I felt a deep disgust and horror of the rebellion members torturing and killing not just the rulers, but of the *children* as well. I felt a bone-deep shiver of unease when we first met Goran and Power and really wanted to somehow find my way into the story so that I could.....”talk”.....to Goran and Power on just about every occasion that they opened their mouths after (Goran *especially*). I had to stop reading for a moment after Power slow roasted, the...sick brat...certainly kept his word, Duck. It was a scene where I swear that I could hear the crowd roaring and smell burning flesh...my legs started to tense as if I was going to be able to get up and run to Duck (before I went to ‘deal’ with Power, of course). Annie made me feel so much pride, with a dash of vindication/smugness, when she snapped her back straight and completely crushed it out there (I was even cheering out loud)! As for Leon? I’ll just say that I hope he does to Power one hundred times over what Power did to Duck, that he takes the path that I’m seriously hoping he will, and that he either moves through the shadows before kicking the doors down or makes a show of it from the get-go while he does it.
All in all, this is an absolutely FANTASTIC read (any book that can make me feel so deeply is definitely in that category) and I’m already itching for more (I *NEED* to know what happens)!
