From the opening pages of Finding Freedom, one is swept into Erin French’s life, beginning with her childhood in a tiny town in Maine, and ending with the success of her restaurant, The Lost Kitchen, in the same tiny town. The journey she took in between was not an easy one as she battled challenging relationships and addiction on her way to ultimately gaining a renewed sense of self. Despite these many obstacles, she always had a vision: to cook simple, delicious food for others to enjoy.

Her writing style is simple; it reads almost like a diary or a dialogue with a friend. Yet her description, especially about food, is incredible - it makes you want to sample one of everything.

The beginning of the book contained so much detail about her upbringing, her family, and her surroundings that one can almost picture themselves in the scenes she describes. The end of the book did not replicate the same level of detail, which may leave you wanting more. After investing yourself in her journey, it only makes sense that you want to know the details of how everything unfolded.

Still, French is brave to open herself up like this and share her story. At times, it felt impossible that someone lived through the life she described. It is a truly remarkable story of how one woman “remade a life from scratch.”
