The Pine family has had a tough time of things. Firstly, the eldest son was arrested and convicted of murdering his girlfriend Charlotte. Then a Netflix special publicized the case for all to see, disrupting lives in the process. Now Matt Pine comes back to his dorm at NYU to discover that his family has all died on their vacation in Mexico. At first it seems like a tragic accident, but then Matt discovers there may be more to the issue that meets the eye...

Finlay lays out a compelling mystery in this book. I liked the characters and enjoyed the reading experience, trying to work out what exactly was going on. I liked the alternating timelines and trying to bridge the gap between Evan and Matt's investigations.

However, I felt somewhat that the ending seemed to fall apart. The writing sometimes felt markedly juvenile, especially the characterization of Matt's friends.
