Exciting and intriguing, this book had my attention from the first line to the very end.

Matthew Pine has had enough tragedy to last a lifetime. His brother is in jail for murder, he has been ostracized from his hometown, and now his family is found dead in Mexico. With the help of FBI special agent Sarah Keller, Matt must sift through the evidence, dredge up painful memories and and face his deepest fears to find out what really happened to his family.

I don’t typically read psychological thrillers, but I’ve consumed my fair share of Dateline episodes and true crime podcasts. I decided to give this one a chance and I am so glad I did. This was nearly a 5-star read for me, but there were a few subplots that left me with unanswered questions.

I enjoyed the way that the story was presented. The book oscillates between the Before and the After of the Pines’ death. By using multiple points of view, the author offers the reader a chance to become attached to these characters by getting a glimpse into their personal lives. This makes their loss even more heartbreaking, allowing the reader to emphasize with Matt’s grief and gain greater understanding of Agent Keller’s drive for justice.

The characters that the author creates are vibrant and interesting. I especially enjoyed the memorable secondary characters such as Matt’s band of misfit college friends or Agent Keller’s husband. These characters bring a much needed shot of humor and light into this dark and haunting story.

Well written and interesting, Every Last Fear captures the reader and doesn’t let go even after the last page.
