OMG
Amazing! I cannot wait to read this one in its entirety. I was expecting a run-of-the-mill murder mystery like so many others on bookstore shelves these days, but this is so much more than that. Not only has Finlay perfectly integrated the modern phenomenon of the Netflix true crime documentary (and I do mean perfectly as the excerpts of the script between chapters are a stroke of genius), but he has also crafted an amazing examination of family dynamics in the wake of public tragedy, while ALSO weaving together a fantastic mystery that begs to be solved. He has managed to very skillfully avoid writing his characters as archetypes, and instead provides fleshed-out portraits of real people coping with the unthinkable. He also dodges retreading any of the ground that pops up in most bestselling thrillers, providing readers with a unique and previously untold story. I have no idea where this is going but I absolutely have to find out.
