I was hooked right away and the short chapters kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen. Each section would get to a really good part and then swap to another perspective, which was frustratingly addictive.

The chapters that were the documentary transcripts and interviews were some of my favorite. I love true crime and it blended well with the story and made me wish I was listening to an audiobook of this.

At times I felt like agent Keller was more fo a caricature than a well developed character. I kept reading because of my love of police procedurals, but I never really clicked with her. I also felt like some portions of the plot were a bit stereotypical from the Mexican authorities and the Americans at odds and neither trusts the other. There is some very weird language in this novel, particularly aimed at Mexicans and even the opening with the homeless man Matt plays chess with that didn’t fit the rest of the book for me. There were so many things I liked, but these aspects made me uncomfortable and detracted from the story.

Overall, I enjoyed the way the story was told, particularly the documentary sections.
