This book starts off with a bang- NYC student Matt Pine discovers his entire family has died while vacationing in Mexico. His brother is serving a life sentence for murder. A crime Matt remembers too well from a distance years ago. The struggle to regain some sort of normal life for Matt has been a battle. But nothing compared to the war he'll wage to get to the bottom of what really happened the night his family died. A trip is in order to claim the bodies and naturally, there is a pretty young woman involved. But this is short-lived, leaving Matt on the side of the road hiding from a badman. And all leads trail right back to the first killing- that of Charlotte.
My strongest hope was to witness the mending relationship between the brothers, especially since they are officially the remaining Pine family. Unfortunately, the author doesn't spend nearly enough time (for me) dealing with the issues of Danny, his false confession, and why he hasn't won an appeal.
It held my interest throughout. Just didn't swing the way I thought it would. Maggie, the young sister was definitely the sleuth in solving the case. Heartwarming to see the lengths she would go to defend her brother. And the fact Matt's father never gave up the search for truth and justice for his son was a plus.
