When four members of the Pine family are found dead while vacationing in Mexico, it is initially written off as a tragic accident. Matt Pine, one of the two surviving members of the family, eventually learns that his family’s destination choice was linked to a lead in his older brother’s case, who is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his girlfriend. While the Mexican authorities believe the deaths were the result of a gas leak, the FBI believes foul play was at hand. If the FBI is correct, does that mean that Matt Pine is in danger as well?

The storyline was unlike anything I’ve read before and this originality, along with the short chapters, tantalizing reveals, and altering perspectives, made it very easy to keep turning the page. I really enjoyed the bulk of Every Last Fear and was even moved to tears a couple times, but my overall satisfaction did diminish slightly as I reached the end.

At some point, relatively early on, I honed in on one character and suspected this person as a villain. I wanted to be wrong about this, as I thought it seemed too obvious, but I wasn’t. This was a minor disappointment but, given how much I’d like everything else, I wasn’t going to let it affect my rating. Plus, I didn’t have the “why” worked out in my head, so there was still plenty to unravel.

The thing that really influenced my decision to dock half a star from the four I had originally expected to give this book was that one of the final scenes played out in a way that left a bad taste in my mouth. It felt like such a cliched Hollywood movie to me. Since the premise had proved so creative until then, this shift really stood out for me.

I think this is a great story, despite the main issue I had with it, and it’s most definitely worth picking up if you like thrillers! Many other early reviewers have sung its praises much louder than I can and their perspectives are definitely worth considering!
