The book is a beautiful whirl-wind of information. The story seems to build and piece together like a puzzle as the narrative unfolds. As the reader, you lean information along with the characters and Finlay does an excellent job of containing the climax of the story until the perfect moment of revelation. The red string on the cover adds to the overall narrative effect as one feels like they are a detective connecting the clues but also a part of the main family and plot line.
For this being Finlay's first novel, I am impressed at the craftsmanship of the story and the amount of emotion they are able to bring out in the reader simply through the words on the page. This novel is a masterpiece in itself. I am excited to see what Finlay decides to explore in future works. While this story is definitely a thriller, it is also a mystery, an older coming of age novel, and a story about family. As such, I can't wait to see what genres, plots, and relations Finlay decides to explore in future works.
