I think that my fascination with space and those who go to space comes from the totally incomprehensible wonder of what that must be like and how absolutely terrified I would be. It is certainly nothing I will ever do or want to do. To imagine being up there for nearly a year, as Scott was, is amazing. I loved the photos, especially the ones in the cupola. They gave me anxiety just looking at them. I admire Scott for coming from an underdog background and becoming such an accomplished person with a rare and illustrious career. I found the writing to be not so technical as to be hard to understand for the average reader. My favorite details were about his day to day basics of life and how space affects the body. As Scott says, "Fruits and vegetables seem to rot much faster here than on Earth. I’m not sure why, and seeing the process makes me worry that the same thing is happening to my own cells." This shows how harsh the environment and effects to astronauts are, maybe more so than we even know. This is a great book for the space aficionado, your dad, or anyone who enjoys science and an inspirational story.
