A few years ago, Celadon Books sent me a copy of Saint X and I fell in love with the book and author Alexis Schaitkin's writing. As a contemporary novel that took on issues of privilege and race, it was completely engaging. When it was over, I eagerly awaited Schaitkin's next novel.

Elsewhere is a completely different book, but is just as beautiful.

It's the story of Vera, a girl in an isolated small mountain town. Its people are fiercely protective of their own and have a unique affliction: some of the mothers will vanish into the clouds. Vera's own mom disappeared this way, and as she grows up, she and her peers wonder who among them will leave their families behind as well.

I found this to be such an interesting take on mothers and motherhood (of which their are many books), and the writing was dreamy and ethereal. And though I wasn't as engaged in it as much as I was Saint X (that one I couldn't put down, while it took me awhile to get through Elsewhere), I did enjoy this as a departure of what I typically read.

A very special thank you to Celadon Books for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a review as part of their Celadon Readers program.
