This novel is one that will definitely make you think. At first glance, the book is about the relationship between mother and child with a little bit of a “coming of age” feel to it. However, as you read you can draw parallels to other themes.
In telling the story of Vera, the author draws upon the feelings any new mother may experience such as the uncertainty that comes with being a new mom. It is easy to picture yourself being “lost in the clouds” as who you were before you were a mom quickly becomes replaced with your new self as a mom.
What is surprising to me is how everyone in town simply assumes that a mother will eventually disappear without questioning what ever becomes of the mother. This assumption can be further translated into how society in general allows things that would be shocking to an outsider to continue in without questioning whether it should.
