I really found the atmosphere and characters in this story, which examines motherhood, really compelling. There was some brilliant commentary that dealt with motherhood, judging other mothers, and the sacrifices women make to their own identity when they become mothers. I just wish the ending was a little bit less ambiguous, and that the world building was a bit more fleshed out. I had a lot of questions about why and how this village came to exist, and why the women who lived there chose to live there. It felt cult-like, but I didn't understand any of the rules of this society. Alexis Schaitkin is no doubt a great writer -- the atmosphere of Saint X was done beautifully -- but I think this book just needed a little more for me as a reader. I definitely recommend this to lovers of cults and readers who enjoy some ambiguity while reading! Thanks to Celadon for the ARC to review.
