Beautiful, but Uncomfortable
This book was very unsettling to read. The first part was sweet until it turned horrifying, the second part heartwarming until it was eerie, the third a nice change of pace until the other shoe dropped, and the fourth just deeply uncomfortable. The whole book carried a sort of dreamlike quality that made for an enjoyable, if slightly boring, read. I was glad the disappearances were explained, though the clues were there from the beginning had I been paying better attention. I never quite clicked with Vera and while the story was super intriguing, there was a degree of detachment that kept me from being fully immersed in the story. I was left wondering how all these disappearances even started in the first place since it doesn't seem like a particularly beneficial thing for society as a whole. The prose was enchanting, but something was missing for me.
