It is clear from the moment that this book begins that the setting is eerie. At first it might seem idyllic and pastoral, remote and unspoiled. Yet the female narrator and all of the females with whom she associates behave so oddly when a stranger comes to town. There is no explanation. But there are disconcerting comments that reveal a negative aspect of even being a female in the first place. There is a lack of camaraderie and a sense of being watched at all times by supposed female friends. Everything a female does is fair game for analysis and criticism when the time comes.

But what is it that comes, that happens, that is feared by all women? Is there an age at which a female is safe? And... safe from what? There is so much mystery that I read the pages as quickly as possible. Sometimes I wondered what the heck is going on, but the twists and turns and surprises never stopped. I've read the whole book and can tell you - You will want to read this!
