Draw and Paint Super Cute Animals by Jane Maday is filled with beautiful illustrations of animals and wildlife from front cover to back. This book promises to teach you the skills to draw all the cute animals within its pages and does a fair job delivering on that promise. It starts off with a brief overview of basic supplies and techniques necessary to complete an illustration, then dives right in to the various “studies” (including: bunnies, cats, dogs, farm animals, sea creatures and many more), in which the artist goes step-by-step through her process of bringing her drawings to life.

I found this book insightful and lovely to leaf through. I enjoy sketching myself (though I haven’t kept it up lately) and it’s always useful to study another artist’s process. However, I felt that though this book is titled “Draw and Paint”, the focus is much more on the painting than the drawing. There is a very brief section at the beginning that goes into the process of sketching the animals from basic shapes that you build up or with a grid and reference photo, however none of the demonstrations go through those steps. Each demonstration (the step-by-step part) starts with a finished outline sketch. I would have preferred to see the entire process. I also felt the steps given on the illustrations could have been a little more in-depth.

Overall, I think this is a lovely book to have for reference and guidance in building skills drawing and coloring animal illustrations. It may perhaps not be the best source for a beginner, but could be a useful tool for an artist with some experience.
