Not quite what it looks like

The animals are adorable and I love how realistic they are. As a parent with children who love both animals and art projects, I mostly wanted to preview this to see if it would be a good fit for them. Sadly, I doubt it. It says right on the cover "step by step" but the "demonstrations" included in the sample start with step 1 as a completed sketch. As a technique book for adults or maybe older teens with basic art skills, this would probably be good, but it's not a beginning drawing book. I'm not even sure I would call it a drawing book at all.
