A slow start leads to a great book

When I first started reading this book, I was a little apprehensive because it started out really slow and without much to keep me interested. But I pushed through and eventually things picked up (especially once the second main protagonist was added). I'm really glad I got a copy of this book and I'm going to be waiting eagerly to see where the author takes these characters next time around.

The only thing that I didn't like about this book was the parts that focused on the dragon and its thought process. I'm not really sure that was needed and it really bogged down the plot/story line when the focus shifted away from the main characters, especially right away. I wouldn't have focused on the dragon as much, or at all in the beginning, since it took me out of the story every time I had to read a part from the dragon's point of view. Don't get me wrong, I love dragons, but not really when all they do is whine and destroy stuff because they are a dragon and that's what they do.

Aside from that, I really loved the characters. Guillot took a bit to get used to, but I came to love him and appreciate the way the author had him start in such a low place only to redeem himself and bring himself back from depression/despair. Solene was a really good addition too and really brought some cool elements to the book, especially her use of magic. I really liked the side character of Dal Sason and the Prince Bishop, even though you aren't supposed to like the Prince Bishop. I am always impressed when the side characters are as strong or as interesting as the main characters.

All around, this was a good book and I'm glad I got to read it early.
