Dragonslayer begins with an explanation of this world as a monarchy in which magic is highly discouraged and dragons have been absent for centuries. Perhaps unsurprisingly, as men regain access to magic, at least one dragon is awakened from a slumber of unknown length. Three characters have been introduced: Amaury, a magic-using bishop; Gills, a reluctant landlord; and Alpheratz, a dragon.

I have to say that the only character I found myself interested in was Alpheratz. While I was a bit surprised to learn that the religious leader is the one subversively bringing magic back into vogue, as soon as he described his quest for the Holy Grail, I quickly lost interest again. And Gills, he kind of reminded me of Bronn (you knew a Game of Thrones reference was inevitable, right?) had he actually had to go act as lord over any of the lands he'd been granted. Just a guy who wants to hang around getting drunk all day every day and not making sure his people are cared for. But Alpheratz, he has a tale to tell, and I would love to see him destroy these people and win the day. However, given the title of the book, I have to assume he is not going to be the victor.
