I rate this book as 1.5/5 stars. I don’t give one star reviews that often, especially books that I read in one sitting. I love thrillers for plane rides because they keep me looped into the story and make time pass faster. This one definitely was a super quick read, but I had trouble staying in the story. The author referenced the pandemic multiple times and it just pulled me out of the storyline. I also really did not like the way the author portrayed mental illness. *SPOILER AHEAD* The POV rotates between Alexa and Beth but the reader finds out that Beth is Alexa’s alternate personality. The author portrayed Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) in a way that makes unknowing and uneducated readers think that DID causes people to murder others. This aspect just rubbed me the wrong way. The fact that Alexa’s father committed suicide because of Alexa’s murderous behavior made me feel uneasy and wary. I also was able to read the twist early on in the book, so the twists didn’t really surprise me. The ending left me less than satisfied and I didn’t think the characters were well developed. I think if the author added 100 pages in the middle and developed the storyline a little bit more, I would have been more attached to the characters. It was a super quick read and I appreciated the ease of understanding the storyline, but it missed the mark for me.
