This novel begins in media res, with a woman in a police station awaiting questioning. Thus, we are immediately plunged into the thick of a murder mystery as Alexa swears that it was her crazy twin sister Beth who murdered Alexa’s boyfriend Curt and left his bullet-ridden corpse in Alexa’s apartment.

Okay then. From then on, we get quick peeks into each woman’s mind as the nervous but confident Alexa embarks on a new life, without her inquisitive twin trailing behind her. However, Beth long ago figured out Alexa’s password and knows from spying into her twin’s emails just what’s going on Alexa’s life. She’s not happy that Alexa is going off and living a life without her. But Beth has plans to change that…

We get a cursory idea of what these two women are like. Beth comes off as sly and cunning while Alexa is painted (at least by Beth) as being naïve, gullible and easily beset by the world. Yet it is Beth locked away in a mental institution for an unspecified incident while Alexa is venturing into the wider world.

But Beth’s not that frail and Alexa isn’t that strong. For some reason, both Alexa’s father and Dr. Greer the psychiatrist want to shield Alexa from the dangers of the world. So there’s more going on here than meets the eye.

It’s got an excellent beginning, letting the reader know that something is terribly wrong in the twins’s lives yet leaving us to wonder just where and how things went awry. It starts you wondering and keeps you guessing throughout the storyline, just like any proper thriller should.
