"Devil is Fine" by John Vercher is off to an interesting start. The plot, thus far, follows the life of Van, a biracial man, who has just buried his teenage son. He's no longer with his wife and decides to return to his position as an untenured professor two days earlier than anticipated, due to loneliness and boredom. On his first day back, he is basically told to "publish or perish". During this time, he received a letter from an attorney that informs him that he has received an inheritance from his mother's father. He feels that this may be a mistake, as he was never close to his grandfather, and in fact, loathed him. After being informed that his tenure is in danger, he contacts the attorney to schedule an appointment. I'm looking forward to seeing how this eloquently written novel moves forward!
