When I first started reading the first look, I was skeptical - and I will admit, it was for a dumb reason that is 100% my own problem. In the first line, there is a mention of a "road flagger" which for some reason threw me off kilter a bit since I have never referred to them as this. Once I got over my own issue, I was immediately brought into the mind and world of a grieving father. And it was absolutely heartbreaking in the ways a reader needs to be brought into a story. It was real, raw, emotional and relatable in the worst type of way for anyone who has suffered a great loss. And then as you get a sense of the dynamics between familial relationships and professional relationships, you are also brought into the reality where just because your world may have stopped, that doesn't mean everyone else's has done the same. The scene with Dave is real and heartbreaking in an entirely different manner. You can start to see where the book is moving towards and I can only hope for the main character (I don't think we ever learn his name in the first look) that it helps him move forward and grow like I think it will!
