This snippet of one man trying to cope after his son’s funeral has a lyrical, almost poetical, feel to it. This is a writer whose book was nominated for a prestigious award and therefore a gifted wordsmith. He’s articulate, well spoken and due for tenure that may be denied him because his books are too controversial.

There is grief and anxiety simmering under the surface of his speech. But he’s long been accustomed to reining in his emotions so there are no tears…at least, not yet. The chapters bubble and seethe with this man’s unspoken feelings, a reticence he learned at his father’s knee. It’s powerful and drags you unwilling into his world.

There is a subtle threat of an eruption. You don’t know when or where it will come. But it lies in wait, just under the surface.
