We are presented with a superhuman, killing machine of a woman and a rogue leader, who left his position of security for moral reasons. I sense a possible romance although we get no interaction between the two main characters. I enjoyed this first look but it did provide a veritable word dump of information for the sake of world building that I hope does not carry into the majority of the text—it was a bit dense. I really like the concept with its post apocalyptic Atlanta and the terrible Tech overload reminiscent of the Terminator films. The idea of human genetic enhancement and body-mind modifications through implantation devices is super cool and I want to know more. This excerpt was super short though so I have lots of questions. What I know now is that I am very intrigued.

Knox, our male lead, is an especially interesting figure because his characterization plays on the morally right outlaw tropes that people love, like Robin Hood. He has given up what is essentially the only guarantee of health by leaving his position (which is probably the equivalent of stealing his own self) to counter those who work for his old boss. He also clearly has a rag tag group of trusted brothers who follows him-one of my absolute favorite tropes ever.

The female character, I think her name is Nina, represents someone who functions as a cog in the system that Knox is fighting against. She can kill four men in the blink of an eye. She is, effectively, a chosen one. She stands out and apart. Her characterization is less developed at this point, but it is promising. She is a wild card at the moment. She could be a traitor to the company who essentially built her or to Knox’s team, who has plans to approach her with an offer she can’t refuse.

I honestly love urban fantasy as a genre and especially urban fantasies with a romance element so I am hoping for a romance between these two, and I can’t wait to see what is in store for them in the rest of the book!
