Wow just wow! I found a new-auto buy author. Ginny Meyers Sain debut novel Dark and Shallow Lies was incredible I loved it. It quickly become my favorite book of the year. Add this straight to the top of your TBR-pile. Set in a small Louisiana town called La Cachette the magic and mystery will have you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. Elora Page is missing she has been for months. That has left a large void in her best friend Grey’s life. She cannot imagine life without Elora.
A disappearance that has left her and everything wondering what exactly had happened to her? La Cachette isn’t just another town in the bayou. It is unique in the fact that it is the self-proclaimed psychic capital of the world. Grey herself shares in that gift. Although in this town it would be more unheard of not to possess a gift of some kind. Grey who spends a lot of her summers in La Cachette with her grandmother Honey is a psychic who has visions and they have increased ever since Elora’s disappearance.
Grey and Elora are more than best friends they are more like soul mates only having been born mere hours a part from one another. Her and Elora are members of a small group known as the summer children. Ten children born to eight different families. Grey, Elora, Hart, Evangline (Evie), Case, Mackey, Ember and Oril. Except Ember and Oril would tragically be found floating in the swamp. A well-known outcast having been suspected of their murder. Ever since Elora has gone missing Grey hasn’t felt right.
Why is a town full of people with so many gifts could their be absolutely no trace of her? She cannot believe she is dead but Hart Elora’s older brother disagrees. He is an empath and he just knows that Elora is gone but Grey refuses to believe it. One of the reasons I loved this story so much was because of the suspense and mystery. The setting and the writing was just so amazing. I felt like I was transported to this spooky town of La Cachette. Grey isn’t willing to move on with her life like the others seemed to. She is determined to find out what happened.
Elora’s older brother Hart has been the same she has vanished. He has been cold and distant but one thing is for sure her loss has greatly impacted them all. The summer before Elora had been pulling away from Grey which just made her cling to her more. Elora did not take this well they had a blow-up than she vanished. Leaving so many unanswered questions. In a town like theirs no can keep a secret but there are many surrounding Elora and the summer children. More than Grey could ever conceive of.
When a mysterious blonde stranger shows up everything Grey thought she knew about her town is blown wide open. The further she keeps digging into Elora’s disappearance more revelations start to come to the surface. She would learn that her mother could start fires with her mind and was the cause of the turmoil that befell the town afterwards. A monstrous boogeyman the rougarou that patrolled the swampy waters turned out not to be a myth.
Grey learns that one of their one of the summer children always held the truth of Elora’s disappearance. I absolutely loved Dark and Shallow Lies I cannot wait to read more from this author!
