Dark and Shallow Lies was such a delightful and captivating read. I love how the setting of the novel was a small town in Louisiana swampland, and that the town was full of magic and psychics. The novel centered around a young girl named Grey whose best friend Elora goes missing in their hometown; Grey is desperate to find out what has befallen her and tries her best to get answers. The novel had lots of twists and turns and kept me guessing until the very end. I really liked the protagonist, Grey, and the other characters were written in ways that made me question their motives throughout the entire novel. The novel was eerie at times, especially towards the end, which made me appreciate the author’s descriptions of the scenery even more.
The only negative thing, in my opinion, was that the ending seemed a bit rushed to me (especially the epilogue). I did not necessarily mind how the mystery was solved but I feel as though the author could have spent a little more time on the reveal and what happened after that. Overall, this is a great and suspenseful novel that lived up to all of my expectations! I would highly recommend it. Thank you so much to RazorBill and BookishFirst for an ARC of this book!
