Grey returns to La Cachette hidden deep in the Louisiana Bayou where she is confronted with a tangle of mysteries linked to her best friend’s disappearance. This small town, known as the Psychic Capital of the World, holds many secrets of its own. This story was an intriguing mystery with supernatural elements that had me fully engaged.

From the moment Grey set foot on La Cachette, it is apparent that Dark and Shallow Lies is going to be an amazingly atmospheric read. I could feel the hot, sticky weather that wrapped around me like a blanket, see ancient gators lurking in the swamp, feel the uneven, rotting planks of the dock, hear the windchimes dangling from a crooked, old front porch, and sense the magic swirling in the air. Ginny Myers Sain knows how to bring the setting to life, and this made for an exceptional read.

The characters were so well developed, and it was so interesting to learn what type of psychic “gift” was inherent to each character. I loved how the author effectively fleshed out each character - they were so real, so life like. I was continually brought back to my reckless days as a teen as I got to know their character, their mannerisms, thoughts, motivations, and those things that would likely push them over the edge.

The aspect that stood out most for me while reading Dark and Shallow Lies was the unrelenting, low hum of impending darkness and danger that made me feel that something very wrong – something was out of alignment with every single character. This made me uneasy in the most amazing way. I didn’t know who to trust, who to peg as having bad intentions, who to root for, or who to believe. I even made a point of reading the book at night after everyone in my family was in bed so I could really ramp up the creepy factor. This was THE perfect late summer/fall read to disappear into.
