This book has it all! It deals with bullying, mental health, and difficult family dynamics. Darius is a teenager who is half american and half persian. Because of this he doesn't feel like he really fits in in either race. At school he deals with bullies and he feels as though he cannot talk to his father about it because he feels his father would be even more disappointed in him. When his grandfather in Iran becomes ill, Darius and his family make the journey to Iran to see him. This is the first time Darius and his sister have ever met this side of their family. While there he has a hard time breaking the tough exterior of his grandfather. He tries to get to know him, while keeping in mind his illness is getting worse and he is not the same man he once was. He also befriends a boy named Sohrab. He finds out they are much more alike than he thought. Their relationship really blossoms and Sohrab really helps Darius with his confidence.
This book has a lot of star trek references in it which it very fun. It also talks a lot about tea, as Darius is very into tea. His whole family is actually. You will learn a lot about the Persian culture as well, which is very nice. From their customs to their language i have learned alot. I absolutely LOVE this book. I think everyone should read it!
