Darius is an engaging, relatable young man, clinically depressed and authentically flawed, who travels to Iran to meet his grandparents and his Persian roots. In America, he has never felt he was "good enough", and he doesn't think he will fit into his mother's homeland either. However, in Iran, he finds a friend next door who believes in him and is able to show him just how special he is. The two boys explore the historic sights and the emotional realities, forging a deep and empowering friendship. The reader easily becomes closely connected to him as he journeys to a better understanding and appreciation of himself, a rewarding relationship with his grandparents, heritage, and friend. A wonderful introduction to a vibrant character and a vivid land.
