Crossbones is a swashbuckling first book in a trilogy. At first I felt like there were too many characters to follow but then it narrows down to just three. Three vying for King of Bones. Or Queen. Each looking to win the Trials after the previous king dies unexpectedly without an heir.

The opening sequence is very exciting even though you know this character will not be hanged, obviously. But then the book slows down a lot. The Trials were really cool and the relationships between the characters, and the side characters who help them out, that was fun. But then it kind of meandered about and took some time to get to the point.

The book cover is really eye-catching and interesting, ugly but in a good way, if you know what I mean. I'm looking forward to the next book in the trilogy because I want to see where this story goes and hopefully it will get better as the groundwork has been laid in this book.
