A fantasy involving pirates, starting with almost executions, and great writing, this book really was great. But I was unable to connect to any of the characters.

The best piece of writing advice, I have ever been taught was: to translate people, personalities, and what makes us human into words. But this author did not manage to accomplish this. And that is this book's biggest downfall. I have literally no other issues with this book, but being unable to connect with the characters is a huge issue. And I'd contribute that to how they are presented. We get to meet our 3 main characters back-to-back-to-back at the start of the book. Now that was necessary, but we weren't able to get much from those first few LONG chapters. Which had me wanting to put this book down.

All in all, this is by no means a bad book. But I'm going to have to deduct 1.5 ⭐️, leaving this book with a total of 3.5 ⭐️.
