High School student Emsy Covington is suddenly wrenched from the California world that she knows, including her girlfriend, to upstate New York and her parent’s coven that suddenly is seemingly under attack, two adults and one child have been killed. Although Emsy knew that her family members are all witches (she is an only child), she did not know that her parents had fled to coven when they got married to have a “normal” life.
As Emsy begins to navigate her New York high school, and learn about the history of her coven and witches, and try to help her fellow high school coven member Ben, whose family were the ones that had been killed, it is all a perfect metaphor for the challenges and opportunities of adolescence.
Illustrator Kit Seaton’s art is a fantastic match for Jennifer Dugan’s story. As with all good graphic novels, the power of the art with the text should be complementary. The realistic style of drawing gives this story and equally realistic sense.
The ending seemed to wrap-up to neatly, and I won’t give anything way, but also a little unsatisfyingly. However, the door is propped open for this to become a series of books, which would allow the author and illustrator to flesh out the characters.
