Overall, I really liked this book! The characters were interesting and cool, and the art was really beautiful. I’m also a big fan of dark and urban fantasy, so this was right up my alley. The zombie element did creep me out a bit since I was reading it mostly in the middle of the night, but it’s more than fine in broad daylight. 😂 my favorite character was Ash, but I really did like all of them.
I really only had one problem with this book, which was pacing. I’m fairly certain that MAYBE two weeks go by in between Emsy moving and getting caught up in a huge necromancy ritual, and it just felt so off. She barely knew these people, but she was risking her life for them THAT FAST? Meanwhile, her human friends are talking about how “different” she is, but how are we supposed to know when she hasn’t been fleshed out very much. I also thought it was weird that she was supposed to be so powerful. She really didn’t seem that dangerous, especially in comparison to Ash, and I wish we got to know more about why she was even supposed to be so strong.
I did like this book, but I didn’t think it was a masterpiece. I did like the art and characters, though, and I’d recommend it to people who like quick reads with lots of magic.
