Jennifer Dugan and Kit Seaton have written a fast-faced mystery set in a wonderfully diverse witchy world perfect for fall. This YA graphic novel follows Emsy, a character easy to root for, who finds herself leaving her friends behind to enter the world of her family’s coven after the mysterious deaths of coven members. The story handles grief, leaving home, and figuring out how you fit into a new place well. I love a found family stories and this graphic novel sets up a cast of characters that feel set up for a sequel. I also appreciated the LGBTQIA representation and had more than one relationship that I’d love to follow beyond this book. The artwork really makes this story sing, bringing the book to life as well as adding to the urgency and emotion of the story. Perhaps because of the quick way the conflict resolves, the story does feel light despite its heavier themes. If you’re looking for a beautiful witchy murder mystery to usher in spooky season, this is a great choice!
