This is my first encounter with a book by Wilbur Smith and I just want to say that I'm not overly impressed with this book. There's a lot of praise for his work but I'm just not seeing it here.
This is supposed to be historical fiction, and it is, but I think this could also be categorized as romance. While I love historical fiction, I'm not a fan of romance. Plus, the writing seems to tell more than show.
As far as characters go, I hated them right away. I can't seem to find anything interesting in them or their story. I had hoped I could get into it but I couldn't and I didn't finished the book, unfortunately. This just wasn't for me, despite how well received it is from other readers.
