Saffron Courtney and Gerhard von Meerbach have been separated because of the outbreak of war in 1939.
Gerhard is fighting with the Nazis though he does not agree with Hitler and hopes he can change things from within. He is not optimistic about his chances of survival after being involved in the Battle of Stalingrad.
